Underglaze and Mishima

An introduction to adding decoration to clay

  • Ended
  • 85 Canadian dollars
  • Nanaimo Ceramic Arts

Service Description

This class provides an introduction to Underglaze and Mishima through a follow-along project. A 5x5” tile will be provided to work on in class, but if you have a bone dry object you would like to decorate with this design, please bring it to class and we will help you adapt the design to fit. The project is not well suited to leather hard greenware. We will discuss the characteristics and benefits of underglaze, how to use templates and other design resources and how to adapt them to your form. We will then show you a few different ways to transfer your design to the tile and get started. The main body of the class is a step by step demonstration which the class will follow along with. There will be lots of time to practice and finish the tile during class. Instruction for firing and glazing outside of class will be given. You will finish this class with a comprehensive reference tile to continue this method on your own. Tools will be provided but if you have any of your own that you would like to try out, please bring them. If you want your tile to be glazed for you, that can be arranged for a small extra fee. No drawing skills necessary.
