I am a ceramic artist from Almaty, Kazakhstan, currently based in Montreal, Canada. Together with Nanaimo Ceramic Arts and Artist Teresa Dorey, we came up with a fundraiser to raise money for Ukraine by auctioning a  sculpture, “Mother.”

My husband’s family and millions of other families have been directly impacted and are suffering the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Cities and villages filled with people, kids, and animals are being destroyed, turned into rubble, or entirely erased by the Russian army. People can’t find safety anywhere because of the continuous bombing. They either live in this constant state of threat or leave their places and go to the unknown to find better conditions. 

During the last months of my residency at Nanaimo Ceramic Art, I created a sculpture thinking of my hometown and the people who occupy it. I had a chance to mentally revisit places that played essential roles in the beginning of my life, places that are so dear to my heart because they were filled with family and friends. That made me think about how architecture and communal spaces are a mediator of connection and a ground for creating memories, feelings and ideas.

We wanted to support Ukrainians by donating all of the proceeds from the auction to  Kyiv Angels. They are a grassroots volunteer organization that started working during the first weeks of the invasion and helps provide food, medicine, and basic needs to those directly impacted by the Russian occupation s.
